If Bitcoin DeFi is such a huge opportunity, why is it stuck at 0.3% TVL penetration?
Because there are real challenges:
- Trust: Current BTC wrappers rely on multisigs or custodians - models that go against Bitcoin’s ethos. Bitcoiners don’t want to entrust their BTC to opaque bridges.
- UX: Dozens of chains and over 40 different BTC wrappers lead to fragmentation and confusion.
How BOB Solves These Challenges
1. Trust: From Wrapped BTC to Native Bitcoin in DeFi
Today, most BTC DeFi is powered by multisig-based wrappers. This won't scale.
BOB is solving this in two phases:
- Now: We partner with Tier 1 DeFi protocols and institutions to offer secure, reliable BTC yield products.
- In progress: We’re enabling native BTC deposits on BOB, powered by Bitcoin staking finality and BitVM bridging. Just like ETH on Optimism is still “ETH” - BTC on BOB will simply be “BTC”.
2. UX: Fixing the Fragmentation
We’ve built the first Bitcoin intents system - allowing users to swap between native BTC, wrapped BTC, and BTC-backed DeFi positions with just one transaction.
This system is now going multichain, unlocking 1-click access to BTC DeFi on all major chains.
- Multichain bridges already support all major DeFi chains - but rarely provide native BTC. By simply integrating the BOB EVM (just like any other EVM chain), they instantly unlock access to native BTC deposits and swaps for their users and integrators.
- BOB Hybrid Vaults allow wallets, apps, and institutions to deploy BTC into DeFi protocols on other chains - without needing to integrate those chains directly. These vaults tokenize BTC yield strategies as ERC-20s, making them easy to integrate and unlock additional yield via DeFi on BOB.
BOB’s Hybrid Model: Secured by Bitcoin, Built for Interoperability
At the core of BOB’s multichain vision is a key insight:Bitcoin is the only major chain that can be efficiently verified by others.
Here’s why this matters:
- Trustless interoperability requires light clients - mechanisms that allow one chain to verify the state and security of another.
- Bitcoin is simple enough to be verified securely via light clients.
- In contrast, most smart contract chains - like Ethereum, Solana, or BNB - are too complex to verify on-chain in a decentralized and cost-effective way.
This leads to a crucial advantage:
- BOB inherits Bitcoin finality through its Bitcoin-secured design.
- That means: to verify BOB’s finality, you only need to verify Bitcoin finality.
- And since Bitcoin can be verified by any chain, any chain can verify that BOB is secure and final - without trusting external validators or multisigs.
As a result: Every major ecosystem - Ethereum, Solana, Cosmos, etc. - can trustlessly interact with BTC on BOB, using Bitcoin as the shared trust layer. This also allows BOB to securely export BitVM-powered BTC tokens to other chains.
Bitcoin becomes the universal trust anchor.
BOB becomes the secure gateway connecting BTC to the rest of DeFi.
